The answer can be, “Yes” or “No”.In this brief post I’ll outline a scenario where it is worthwhile to spend $25.00 for your local online marketing campaign. I’ll also point out where it would be better for you to keep save your money for other local online marketing efforts.Below are the search results of my search for: austin plumbers. In this case, Google presented the local business results at the top of page 1.Notice the 3rd listing down has the little yellow tag with “10% off initial service”. That’s a Google Tag.As you can see, the tag does help this listing to stand out. The $25.00 monthly investment is worthwhile in this case.
Here’s a few scenarios where I recommend you not spend your local online marketing dollars for Google Tags:

Your business is not already showing up in the local business results

To get the most bang-for-your-buck you need to already be showing up in the local search results for your chosen keyword(s). Otherwise, you are wasting your money. Google doesn’t show any favoritism just because you are spending $25.00 / per month for Google Tags. Remember, the only place your Google Tag will show up is in the local business results. If your business doesn’t show up, your tag doesn’t show up.

The local business listings are saturated with Google Tags

As more local businesses adopt Google Tags, you will see most listings with the little yellow Google tags. At that point, the highlight effect of the tag is negated. I did a few quick locale + plumber keyword checks in other locations to see if this was the case and I couldn’t find where this has occurred yet. The keywords I searched were:

Los Angeles Plumber

Manhattan Plumber

San Francisco Plumber

If you are interested in maximizing your local online marketing efforts, give me a call.
Post from: PinPoint Vision Chris Lagarde, the owner of PinPoint Vision, has been helping brick-and-mortar businesses reduce ad costs and increase their profits since 1998.Chris helps local business owners successfully market to their local clientele with inexpensive online marketing techniques. When an email marketing message is sent, the sender can determine (roughly) how many people opened the email, what links were clicked on and how often, and even if the message was forwarded. With direct mail you can track calls received, but then again, that’s as long as you and your staff make the effort to note the origin of each received call. For a small business that can be a tall order! On the other hand, tracking email metrics is vastly easier. For these reasons (and more) many businesses are switching to email marketing according to Borrell Associates. In the study published May 2009, Borrell Associates reports direct mail efforts will decline nearly 40% over the next five years from an annual spend of $49.7 billion in 2008 to $29.8 billion by the end of 2013. Borrell Associates also found more coupons and catalogs are being distributed digitally which will continue to spur local email advertising. How much of your marketing budget is spent on direct mail? It’s always better to start building your email list now rather than later.
Even people you wouldn’t expect to Twitter are jumping on board this social phenomenon.Yesterday I was doing some work out of my home, took a five minute break and flipped on the TV. Scrolling through the channels I landed on Jerry Springer just as Jerry is asking his TV audience to follow him on Twitter. Wow. Jerry Springer tweets (or more likely, someone tweets on Jerry’s behalf). It looks like tweeting is heading towards mass acceptance much like what has occurred with voice mail, email, and the internet previously.Initially, I didn’t get Twitter..at all. Why would I be interested in your tweet on what you ate for lunch? But I’ve also found some useful case studies of effectively using Twitter. Here’s my challenge to myself. I will find useful applications of Twitter and post the best of these applications here on my website. No need to present frivolous uses of Twitter. Already too many to list. Keep an eye out for my updates by visiting again, or you can always sign up for email or RSS updates at the top right of my website.
